AMD Catalyst 8.97 12.6 BETA July 3 HD2/3/4000 Series

AMD Catalyst WHQL Logo

AMD has moved to the AMD Radeon™ HD 2000, AMD Radeon HD 3000, and AMD Radeon HD 4000 Series new driver support model. These updates will focus on resolving application specific issues and critical updates. The reason for the shift in support policy is largely due to the fact that the AMD Radeon HD 2000, AMD Radeon HD 3000, and AMD Radeon HD 4000 Series have been optimized to their maximum potential from a performance and feature perspective.

CERT recently approached AMD with information pertaining to what they believed to be a possible video driver vulnerability exposed by non-default settings of the Microsoft® Enhanced Mitigation Experience Toolkit (EMET). EMET is a security test tool that allows system administrators to create test conditions to validate correct behavior of system components or indicate potential weak points. The presence of an issue does not necessarily mean that this issue can be exploited in regular operation of a system. The default safety settings of the EMET do not cause the issue in question to occur.

The AMD Catalyst 12.6 beta driver for the AMD Radeon HD 2000, AMD Radeon HD 3000, and AMD Radeon HD 4000 Series is designed to resolve a possible video driver vulnerability issue and to minimize the occurrence of system crashes.

What’s the point of the latest driver being released for legacy hardware??

    • Name

lmao. I thought the same thing. HD7xxxM and Desktop series need more attention now.

  • lowend

funny, people complain for the lack of support the AMD given to the old radeon series cards, and now that they finally listened, there are more people complaining saying that AMD should focus on HD 7xxx cards. geeez what the hell do you want anyway.

    • pillum

haha, this is soooooooooooo f*cking true

people always need to complain -.-

  • Name

I think all series are important, I’ve never complained about anything, but I think that the newer series deserve more attention as many people are having more issues with the newer series.

Links are now working and this update fixed the display issue of my RADEON HD 3470 on windows 8 RP

    The links aren’t working lol

It is severly uneeded to be concerned that AMD will take much attention away from everyones brand new 7000 series cars. The 6000 and 7000 series still have vast unused potential. Even the 5000 series is still used for testing prior to releases on its older brothers.

Honestly though. Radeons have alot of good manufacturers Sapphire, MSI, ASUS. etc. and thier cards hold up and in this economy mainstream gamers aren’t going to upgrade to the newests cards if thier others are still working. I use a HD6970 2GB in my main rig and a HD4870x2 2GB as a backup. So for me it makes very much sense that AMD is making these drivers available on occasion to fix and support these cards. I say a company should at least offer support for cards for at least 8-10 years to allow for those who are slow to upgrade..

I have a Sapphire HD2600 Pro AGP that has been running for about 5 years and has no inclination of letting up and runs many titles at decent enough resolution. As I said though I am running an HD6970 2 GB and I plan to get a HD7970 Ghz edition and believe me these cards won’t have any more attention given or taken away by maintaining thier older series of cards at AMD. you would be suprised to know thiere are still retailers selling new in box models of earliers HD series 4000 and earlier. No sweat.

AMD and nVidia always have to learn thier new cards after releasing them. At least AMD has alot of the features in the later models hidden in the previous model so they can test them sooner and release them for the newest model faster. AMD has a system its no perfect but none are. With all the titles and amazing things we are able to do I would say they are doing a decent job of thier difficult work.

  • lowend

kudos for solidether. I think especially lately, AMD has finally pay total attentions to every radeon users outthere, and i can see that they are now working really hard to cover all the users issues with their radeon cards. That is not easy believe me.

  • NexusBlues

Does this driver perform better than the April 18th one on these cards? I can’t really test them…

    • lowend

i think the aim of the driver released is not about performance. There is a talk about vulnerability issues related to the legacy cards, i think the driver would protect and prevents the card from being “overdrived” that it would go haywire, or some sort….. i think.

    What utter nonsense
