AMD Catalyst 12.6 9.00 BETA June 12 Benchmark

AMD Catalyst Benchmark Logo

We have our 3rd 12.6 Beta Catalyst package leaked and all this in just under three weeks. With AMD’s new Catalyst release calendar it seems we can expect a leaked driver each week, let’s see how long this trend sticks. The previous two 12.6 BETAs weren’t performing as good as previous drives but HD7000 owners saw significant improvements in terms of performance and bug fixes. It’s safe to say that at least these 12.6 Beta drivers are focused on HD7000 cards rather than on previous series.

Further more, the previous two 12.6 drivers were under-performing in DiRT 3 DirectX 11, about a 25% loss in FPS from almost all Catalyst drivers released since the game is available.

You may have noticed that this particular 12.6 Catalyst driver comes with a 9.00 main driver string. It was rumored that this 9.00 string would be a leap forward regarding new features and possibly, performance. We’ll have to wait for an official 9.00 release before we can see what we should expect on the future as SSAA for DX10+ games is still unsupported on GPUs prior to HD7000, a feature implemented for HD7000 cards several months ago.

Looking at the INF files, Windows Vista is not supported but there is support for switchable graphics and the next generation of Radeon GPUs codenames make their appearance through the supported cards list, the code names are inspired by our own Solar System: Venus, Mars, Sun and a rather large Swedish island named Oland. The 8xxx GPUs are closer than you think and are worked on as we speak…

Tested Drivers and Information

Prior to installing a driver, a sweep was done in safe-mode using Phyxion Driver Sweeper.

Make the changes you mention. Also if you can on conclusion mention how the driver feels, like stuttering or image flickering corruption. Maybe some drivers feel smoother from others but fps don’t different. Thanks, you are doing a great job.

    • http://benchmark3d.com Johnny 3D

I always mention everything that is wrong with the driver (bugs, IQ quality, etc), (un)fortunately I never have issues with my HD6950 so there isn’t anything to mention other than performance related things.

  • HQT

    Great benchmark. Thanks
Can you clarify about switchable graphics support? Does this package include Intel HD drivers?

    • http://benchmark3d.com Johnny 3D

      Yes, it does.

      • HQT

That might explain the ~740MB unpacked size.
        Thanks again.

  • Netcat

So maybe for my mobility 5730 would be better this than the 8.97 one!?

  • cristian

    thk.. good work !!!

  • mohammed

is this good driver for my hd 5670 ?????

  • Mohammed

is this good for hd 5670 ?!!

  • Renato84

While they fixed hdmi sound output disappearing in all 12.6 betas, the problem got worse, at least on my 7950. Now I get an unbearable constant crackling on all 5.1 channels. You didnt mention this (I presume you dont use hdmi sound output).

    • http://benchmark3d.com Johnny 3D

You’re right, I don’t use the card’s HDMI output. It’s impossible for me to “catch” all issues with a driver, that’s why communities exist, if there is a issue with a driver I will report in the article but usually I don’t have any issues with my HD6950 and/or drivers.

Generally speaking, if you have an issue with a driver it would be a good idea to report it to AMD through this report form: http://www.amdsurveys.com/se.ashx?s=5A1E27D20B2F3EAC

  • Renato84

I have yet to test this one, though.

would the skyrim boost be possible because of skyrim patches ? or do you have your steam on not automaticly updating games?

    • http://benchmark3d.com Johnny 3D

I haven’t updated Skyrim in quite some time because I didn’t want to retest the whole 22 drivers. Skyrim is version 1.5 for all 22 drivers, I have updated Skyrim a month or two ago (when they added shadows for grass) and had to retest about 15 drivers which took a whole day basically, I don’t want to repeat that operation any time soon.

So, the Skyrim boost is related to the driver and not to a game update.

  • Exostenza

Why use driver sweeper if it has not been supported since 2011?

    • http://benchmark3d.com Johnny 3D

It’s a whole lot easier to use than Atiman Uninstaller. Both Driver Sweeper and Atiman Uninstaller miss files or registries but because Driver Sweeper only needs 2-3 clicks to use it’s what I recommend. I used both apps and the results were similar.

    • dr.fartnote

what not supported? 3.2.0 is current. works great…just don’t download from Guru

  • Mohammed

please answer me BenchmarK3D “is this good driver for my hd 5670″

      yes all radeon suport

  • Luke

Please add to your tests the great Witcher 2 EE & Max Payne 3.
    Thanks for all your work!

  • Sandro

I have switchable graphics ati 6770m+Intel, and this drivers did not work, in fact it didnt detected my intel.. i noticed inside the folders the intel drivers were only for winidows 8? weird. any ideas? i want an official recent driver on my switchable graphics laptop.. bah

  • Dan

Exellent work as always! But a trivial question: is this island mentioned referring to Öland or Åland? (the pronunciation is almost the same) cas the other one is part of Sweden and the other is part of Finland :D not that it really matters ;P
Well whatever :D , I really love this site man. I didnt even realize the performance differences in different drivers before this! Always thought the newest is the best :D Thanks for your hard work!

I don’t know if this is normal, but when I installed this driver, a new startup program ran in place of CCC.exe called CLIstart.exe. It has a system tray icon which had the same picture as the control center but when right clicked i dont get the configuration settings. When i click the icon to launch the control center, there is a long delay, the icon dissapears and the CLIstart.exe process stops. after a minute the CCC.exe will start normally and i have acess to all of the configuration settings in the sys tray icon.

    • Chinley

Go to ur startup manager and add MOM.exe to ur startup entries

Did something change concerning how you bench BF3?
It seems to me the performance gets worse step by step.
E.g. there were drivers like “8.951.1 05 March” which got 35 min. FPS and still close to 38 FPS on the average front.
Or maybe its just the summer heat?
