AMD Catalyst 12.4 WHQL Benchmark

AMD Catalyst Benchmark Logo

AMD Catalyst 12.4 WHQL brings XP support for HD7000 Cards and fixes low quality textures, an issue that plagued previous drivers but the only affected cards were the HD7000 ones.

Besides that the other major change is MLAA 2.0 is now officially implemented. Personally, I had one expectation from 12.4 WHQL, SSAA support for DX10+ games with HD5000 and HD6000 cards but AMD decided not to do this. After dropping monthly catalyst drivers support for pre-HD5000 cards, this feature should have been implemented, maybe next month…

But anyways let’s find out how 12.4 WHQL performs against 12.3 WHQL and the latest leaked driver that is also the best performing one to date, 8.97 18 April.

Tested Drivers and Information

Prior to installing a driver, a sweep was done in safe-mode using Phyxion Driver Sweeper.

Man, that was really fast! You have saved me a lot of time in past few months testing new drivers instead of me and I really appreciate that. Gues I’ll stick to the 8.97 18 April drivers for some time… Is there any other way I could donate because PayPal is not working (yet) in my country (Serbia)? Keep up the good work…

  • Nick

In Deus Ex: Human Revolution there is less stuttering with this driver.

    • Luke

      Great news!!!
      Thanks!

  • Ricardo BR

    Thank you!

    Very fast always!

  • Ckyl

Thanks for the nice benchies again! Keep up the good work!
(Also, try to get that 1080p or “1200p” monitor) :-)

  • Luis

    Thanks for the benchmarks!

  • Priyesh

Can U Mod This Driver With 7900 Series Plz….& Benchmark It?

    • Jay

Not sure it would be worth his time modding this one seeing as 8.97 18 April is the better performer. It would probably be a better idea for you to stick with that one for now.

  • kn00tcn

someone on twitter said MSAA box artifacts in skyrim are fixed in 12.4

  • rafaelhikari

    thanks for the bench

  • khanmein

bro.. ur meaning of pre-HD5000 like those desktop card 5850, 5870 & etc..

if like mobility HD 5650 how? thanks

    • fake

      as i know
amd now will only support driver card class 5000/6000/7000 series
      5000 series including your 5650

  • BenchmarkYUKA

Hi Bench3D, u can make a test of comparision and check yes now is really what now have a 80% in performance in MLAA, when use the Drivers 12.4 Beta and the 12.4 WHQL.

Thanks yes u can make a comparision please, thank very much.

    • BenchmarkYUKA

I say with the new MLAA 2.0, what AMD say what have a gain of 80% Performance. thanks.

    • http://benchmark3d.com Johnny 3D

We’ll get the same results…up to 80% doesn’t mean a exact 80% gain. That’s just marketing, cheap one if you ask me…

      • BenchmarkYUKA

        Thanks Very Much.

  • Priyesh

@Benchmark3d how can i check SSAA Working or not in game?is there any application?

  • campdude

The big deal with this 12.4 release is the windows xp support for the 7970.
I was so happy when it happened… I am too lazy though to do benchmarks with DX 9 games in Win 7 vs XP….. it would be interesting though on the 7970.

    • http://benchmark3d.com Johnny 3D

Is 7900 CF working or not on XP?

EDIT: I think it doesn’t, anyways I sent you a email so check your hotmail inbox.

  • SolidEther

LOL, good label BM3D -The” infamous atipdlxx.dll” a small file that has caused big contraversy. Maybe at this point AMD is leaving it missing for all the publicity the contraversy is generating.

I have 12.3 driver. Is it safe to use auto-update to 12.4 or i must delete 12.3 with uninstaller, Driver Sweeper, CCleaner and install 12.4?

    • http://benchmark3d.com Johnny 3D

Installing one driver on top of another works but it’s always safer to do a sweep before installing a different driver.

  • Tchouk

For BF3 i always have the ” AMD Catalyst 12.4 Beta 8.96 15 March “, is this new 12.4 whql are better or not ?
    thx ^^

    • http://benchmark3d.com Johnny 3D

The two are exactly the same when it comes to performance with Battlefield 3.

      • Tchouk

ok thx a lot mate ^^

  • Mast3rkill

Hi, I tested this driver but I got about 2-3 fps less in some games, and in amnesia the dark descent I got white textures on decals, strange. I just reinstalled 8.97 modded by you. Will you do the same mod to this driver?

    • http://benchmark3d.com Johnny 3D

I don’t think “modding” a whql driver is really necessary unless if really you want the extra 1-2 fps. There were a few request concerning this and I guess I’ll have to comply. I’ll have them ready in 1 or 2 days.

  • mdrdeephouse

With respect: i have a question- is it good to upgrate to 12.4 catalyst? I have ati HD6950 2gb, I have 12.1 preview driver(works great). so is it better than 12.1 ? thank you.

    • http://benchmark3d.com Johnny 3D

I would recommend updating but not necessarily to 12.4 WHQL, 8.97 18 April is a good driver, you may want to try that out and if you have issues you can always go back to 12.1.

Know that starting with 12.2 AMD removed a dll that was essential to 3rd party apps like MSI Afterburner. OC function from such apps will not work anymore unless you manually copy the dll. But since you have 12.1 and you don’t do a driver sweep that dll will remain on your computer and you won’t need to manually copy it.

If you ever do a driver sweep/reinstall Windows don’t forget about atipdlxx.dll

      • IgorPrecep

Just a little correction about Catalyst 12.2 (and later) and latest MSI Aterburner… MSI Afterburner 2.2.0 (released: 2012/4/19) includes atipdlxx.dll in main install dir of MSI Afterburner. OC is working fine again (I’ve tested it myself same day when version 2.2.0 was released) without need to manualy copy atipdlxx.dll in appropriate place in Windows dir. Quote ( from: http://event.msi.com/vga/afterburner/download.htm ) : “…ATIPDLXX.DLL is now redistributed with MSI Afterburner to address issues with unofficial overclocking under Catalyst 12.2 and newer AMD drivers…”

        • http://benchmark3d.com Johnny 3D

I’m pretty sure they said that they will not support AMD Cards anymore. Besides AB, there are a lot more programs that need that dll to function correctly and not only the OC functions. I couldn’t take screenshots with RadeonPro until I copied that dll…

  • domi

could you also compare the 12.4whql driver with the extreme g 12.4 driver from tweakforce.com?
    would be nice

    cheers

  • Chris

Did you enable DOF in the Metro 2033 Benchmark?
    Thanks in advance.

    • http://benchmark3d.com Johnny 3D

I never enable dof in Metro 2033, it is just too taxing for my 6950. 50% less FPS with dof on.

  • Sudeep

I am using 11.12 beta 8.93 18 Nov. For future up coming games like Max payne i would like to up grade my driver. So what should I do. A clean install of 12.4 whql or updating over present driver (8.93)? or may be stick to the 8.93 driver. Please suggest with mode of installation i.e. update or clean install.

  • Sudeep

    I have a sapphire HD 6770 GC (775/1200) 1 GB
